Social & Novice Tournament 2011 (non record status)
Report
Harlequin Bowmen held their 1st Indoor Social & Novice Tournament over the weekend of 26 / 27th February 2011. This concluded a 1 year project for helping to sustain club members and improve the growth of the club membership. We were delighted to have won a 6K Grant from Sport England to help us execute this project.
This grant has enabled us to purchase new beginner’s bows & equipment, compound & long bows so as club members can try out different styles of shooting. New bosses, stands and back stop net for our indoor shooting venue.
Out of the grant has come funding for extra club coaching sessions & a beginners course in John Mason School sports hall along with hiring of higher level coaches. We have also run an “After School Club” once a week from October to March as part of this project.
The 2 day Indoor Tournament was the last part of the project to encourage new & novice archers to shoot in a competitive environment. We had three sessions shooting a Portsmouth round. Each session was run like a small individual shoot with awards & certificates given out at the finish of each session. This enabled more of the archers to gain awards. We had about 30 archers shoot in each of the 3 sessions. Our catering team even served up Hot Dogs as well as the usual hot drinks and cake!
It ran very smoothly throughout the weekend, all those who attended seemed to enjoy themselves. We had several very new archers shoot and said they appreciated the more relaxed atmosphere and smaller number of archers for their first Tournament experience.
Not withstanding that, the tournament was conducted within GNAS Rules of shooting using 3 Field Captains on each session.
We would like to thank all those who attended and hope to see them next year.

Supermarine Bowmen Wyvern Shoot 2011
The Wyvern Shoot was held on Easter Monday, it was a very friendly shoot with Easter Eggs and Medals as prizes.
As usual with Supermarine it was windy but lovely and warm in the sun. The rabbits had been busy digging holes in the field, so we had to watch our step although the groundsman had tried to fill them all in.
Mick got best gold for Longbows and won an Easter egg. And came 3rd in all with 306.
Pauline came second in the Ladies Compound class with 752.

Another good medal haul for Harlequin Archers
Brian, Denys, Gavin, Danny and Mark travelled south for the AC Delco Trinity Hereford. Expecting the weather to be overcast and cool the sun gods were happy with the archers and the sun came out for a good part of the day, much to the surprise of Gavin and Mark who caught the sun a little bit. The wind gods were being their usual bu*g**s, but the trees down the side of the field helped a bit, apart from the gap at about 70 yards, which didn’t help when you are shooting 80 yards.
At the end of the shoot the raffle gave a good haul of three raffle prizes.
The medal ceremony delivered up
Gold Compound for Danny
Silver Compound for Denys
Gold Barebow for Gavin
Silver Barebow for Mark
Silver Compound Team for Brian, Denys and Danny
Well done to everyone and a special congratulations to Mark for his first medal at grown up distances.
(And before you say anything, there were more than 2 shooting)
Grand Western Archery Society Dunster Week
From the 13th to the 19th of June was the 56th Dunster week and the 138th GWAS Championships.
The entire Taylor clan travelled down looking forward to a great week of archery. Last year the weather had been beautifully hot, little wind and a great week, we were hopeful for the same.
Monday was the day of the FITA. Only Danny took part. The weather was damp, breezy and cool and that was the weather for the whole week.
Tuesday was the day of the field course which was meant to be ok for beginners but they could not be more wrong. It was hot, STEEP and a very long walk. Even after all of that it was still a very challenging but enjoyable course. Everyone endured that one.
Wednesday was the day of the two way longbow shoot with Danny, Denys and Brian taking part. With many people dressed up in traditional dress it was a great sight to see over 200 people shooting only longbows.
Thursday was the 2 way clout with everyone involved. As many of those who have shot a clout know clout shooting is very affected by the wind. Dunster is famous for its strange swirly wind. With the clout being two way, it made it very interesting with a head wind one way and a tail / cross wind the other.
Friday was a well-deserved day off before the double Hereford / York. Once again the wind and weather took over with strong cross winds and heavy showers.
After a very long and exhausting week it was great to see so many Harlequins coming away with trophies and medals. Please see below for the full results, but in a nut shell.
Danny won the FITA, Clout, Visitor Champion of the West for the double York and the Victor Ladorum.
Gavin won silver for the double York, although he was 1st Visitor and 2nd in the clout.
Brian came third in the clout and Denys second in the clout.
It was a fantastic and very tiring week. Please see the photos below for some of awards.
