Well done to them both.
Wood on the field

As the rugby club are starting to use the field again, can archers please ensure that any bits of wood that are knocked off the stands are picked up. We don’t want any of the rugby players getting stabbed with these huge splinters.
The passing of one of archery’s greatest.

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Janet Faralewski, the organiser of Dunster Week, a long time judge and one of the nicest ladies we have ever met. She died peacefully in hospital on the 30th December.

Anyone who has shot at Dunster or Devizes will know or have heard of Janet. Along with her husband Eddie, who died in 1997, she has been organising Dunster week since 1992.

Even though she had MS she would be seen trundling up and down the line in JAN1, her buggy that was donated by the archers.

Some of our juniors, who are now seniors, remember the support she would give to juniors when judging a shoot. She would always have a smile on her face and a pleasant word for everyone she met.

As one of the many  'Visitors to the West' we would like to send our condolences to all her friends and family. She will be greatly missed, but we are sure her spirit will still be on that sheep field in Somerset for one windy week in June.

Here is a link to an obituary written by Nick Nicholson, Janet's second in command.

Archery Demonstration

Brian and Danny were asked if they could give an archery demonstration for the small primary school in Clifton Hampden, as they were doing a project on myths and legends and a play about Robin Hood.

So on the afternoon of Monday 8th June they took along a boss, stand, a longbow, a horsebow, a recurve and a compound to give an idea on the history and changing technology in archery.

The a lot of the school (pupils and teachers) collected on the local recreation ground and were very impressed with the talk and even more impressed with the shooting demonstration.

At the end of the session the teachers and the older children had a go with a fibreglass bow and tried to shoot a balloon on the boss. All the boys went first and couldn’t hit it, so it was left to the girls to burst it.

A slide show of pictures of the event can be seen HERE.

Have a Go Sessions on Saturday 21st August

10am till 4pm

Have you ever wanted to have a go at Archery?

Well now you can have the chance to see if this sport is for you.

On Saturday 21st August we will be having 30 minute Have a Go sessions on our sports field for the very reasonable fee of £3 per session. You can have as many sessions as you want (or can afford).

Each session will be with a senior club archer under the direction of our GNAS qualified coaches. All equipment will be provided. By the end of the session you should be able to hit the middle.

The sessions are open to all people from the age of 8 upwards. Some young children may not be able to shoot due to their size, young children’s bones are still growing and putting too much strain on them can stop them growing. This would be decided on the day, so please don’t be offended if your child cannot shoot, but we are only doing it for their safety.

A map of how to get to our club can be found HERE.

If you have any questions or have a large group that would like to come at the same time, or would like to book some sessions at a specific time then contact Mick Tappin HERE

Friendly Shoot with Reading Archers

Saturday 17th July 2010

On Saturday 14 Reading members visited the club for a friendly shoot. Luckily 14 club members also turned up, so it made it even on both sides. The Harlequin team consisted of Compounds, Recurves, a Longbow and 2 new members who had recently finished their beginners course. The Longbow and Compound scores were adjusted to the recurve equivalent, by Steve, and the scores were combined.

Congratulations to Reading for a well deserved victory.

The full results can be seen HERE.

Many thanks to Nick (Catering Officer) for the much appreciated hot dogs and to Denys (Records Officer) and Nick for the lovely cakes.

Everyone said how much they enjoyed the day and Reading have said that they hope to host it next year and hopefully it will become an annual event.
